Owner Comments:
O.105 Large Date, Small Letters. Eliasberg. Finest known of the die variety. This variety and the O.106 of LD,SL Halves has a repunched 4 in the date, similar to the 1824/4 overdates. Three main varieties of 1834 Halves are listed in the Redbook, LD, LL; LD, SL and the more common SD,SL but all are readily available reflecting an abundant mintage of Halves this year. Obtained by private treaty with Mint State Gold Inc. on on 10/2/2012. Also has edge lettering error E25: FIFTY CENTS OR A DOLLAR. Edge letter errors caused by the Castiang machine on quite common on early half dollars. this particular variety is known as the "take your pick" variety since you are given a choice its seems between half a buck and a buck. The rarest edge letter errors and the only ones worth significant premiums are doubled edge letters (small premium), tripled edge letters 9solid premium) and absent edge letters (substantial premium). The other minor differences don't do much for value. Previously from Bowers and Merena Auction of the Eliasberg Collection on 4/7/1997, Lot 1890.
