Owner Comments:

El Yunque National Forest located in northeastern Puerto Rico. It has long been recognized as a special place, being set aside as a preserve as early as 1876 by one if the Spanish kings. In 1903, it was established as the Luquillo Forest Reserve. In 1935, it was renamed Caribbean National Forest. Finally, in 2007 the name was changed to the local name, El Yunque. According to Wikipedia, the name, “El Yunque” may be attributed to either a Spanish approximation of the aboriginal Taíno word yu-ke which means "white lands", or the word "anvil," which is yunque in Spanish.
The El Yunque National Forest quarter is the first of 2012 and the 11th overall in the program. This beautiful quarter features a Coqui tree frog and a Puerto Rican parrot sitting on lush tropical vegetation. The parrots are an endangered species only found in Puerto Rico. It is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System.
