NGC graded MS 66 BN, EAC MS 63
Variety: N-4, die state c
This coin is a real headlight. The photo hints at the wonderful luster on both sides. There are a few trivial contact marks, the most notable ones are at the nose, above the head between stars 7 and 8, and below NT of CENT. There is also a small planchet lamination near the end of the stem.
After spending quite a bit on middle dates from the Naftzger collection, I set my sights on the Naftzger late dates. At the time, I had a decent MS62BN 1841 cent that I had bought raw from Chris McCawley. I was able to upgrade to an MS65BN from the Naftzger collection. It's a really nice coin I intend to keep, but less than a year later, this coin appeared in a Heritage auction, and I just had to have it.
From the Heritage catalog:
1841 1C MS66 Brown NGC. N-4, R.1.
The usual die state with a rim cud beneath the date and one lengthy die crack on each side. This beautiful representative has exemplary luster and rich blended gunmetal and golden-brown toning. Essentially free from any indication of abrasion, and the strike is intricate aside from a couple of star centers. MRB MS63.
