Bush was the President of the United States.Richard Cheney was the Vice President of the United States.Former US President Jimmy Carter won the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize.Coming off of a year of only part time employment in 2001, I started teaching in 2002. The decision was not off the cuff but rather something about which I had thought long and hard and about which my wife and I had many hours of discussion. Corporate America was no longer fun and the jobs I had interviewed for were all the same thing so it was time for a change. My degrees in engineering backed by an MBA made it an easy transition from the corporate world into the fields of math education. Fortunately, math teachers are not extremely plentiful and I convinced a local school I was the best fit for a mid-term opening they had available. I walked into a high school classroom for the first time in January and can proudly say I have never looked back. 2002 was also my first year as the Assistant Coach for the Varsity Baseball team. The nation was still reeling from the terrorist attacks of 911. In March, US troops start operation Anaconda in Afghanistan to oust remaining el-Qaeda terrorist and the remaining Taliban fighters. The United Nations also passed a unanimous resolution calling for Iraq to disarm or face serious consequences. North Korea admitted to developing a nuclear program in defiance of a U.N. resolution. Chechen rebels took 726 hostages in a Moscow theater and Russian authorities messed up the rescue killing 116 of the hostages in the attempt. Closer to home, 2002 was the year that the energy firm Enron collapsed spurring a wave of corporate reform laws in congress. The nation and the world lost a number of notable people in 2002 including the Queen Mother of England, Byron White (former US Supreme Court Justice) Johnny Unitas (football), Ted Williams (baseball), Milton Berle (comedian-actor), Rosemary Clooney(singer-actress), Lionel Hampton (musician), Peggy Lee (musician), Dudley Moore (actor) and Ann Landers (newspaper columnist). The Anaheim Angels won the World Series defeating the San Francisco Giants, 4 games to 3. The New England Patriots won the Super Bowl defeating the St; Louis Rams. The Detroit Red Wings won the Stanley Cup defeating the Carolina Hurricanes, 4 games to 1. The Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA Championship sweeping the New Jersey Nets. The University of Maryland defeated the University of Indiana to win the NCAA basketball Championship.
