Lyman Allen #8.09 (KM #169) - Mintage: 1,360,693

General
By 1913, most of the recoinage had been completed, however removal of Spanish silver coinage and silver coinage of the first U.S. Philippine series continued for many years and were regularly sent to San Francisco for recoinage. The primary driver for coinage production though was demand for circulating coinage. Demand was growing and more coins were struck in 1913 than in each of the prior two years. From the die life statistics published by the U.S. mint, nearly twice as many coins were struck by each die pair as in the previous years. Consequently, many of the 1913 ten centavos exhibit evidence of die erosion and die cracks since they were stuck with dies that should have been retired.

By law, one out of every 2,000 silver coins struck was put aside and sent to Philadelphia at the end of the calendar year for analysis by the annual assay commission. In every year for which data was available, the number calculated from the total mintage and the actual number reported by the assay commission match exactly with the exception of 1918 and this year. Based on the reported mintage, 681 coins should have been reserved for assay, however only 197 were actually reserved and analyzed by the assay commission. No explanation was given for the small number reserved.

This Coin
This coin exhibits a clean and brilliant surface with very excellent eye appeal. Notice the die crack connecting the tip of the eagles right wing to the denticles on the reverse.
