Owner Comments:
The 1908 No Motto Double Eagle is sometimes referred to as the "Godless $20" because of the missing motto (IN GOD WE TRUST) just above the sun on the back of the coin. The motto was ordered off the coin by President Teddy Roosevelt, an otherwise religious man who felt the words violated the Constitutional separation of church and state and that God's name had no business being on a coin. However, due to Congressional and public influence, the motto was restored later in 1908, where it remained until the series ended in 1933.
