Owner Comments:
James Garfield, serving only a few months in 1881, would actually accomplish much in his short term. He would take on the corrupt civil service head on. Senator Roscoe Conkling and his Republican Stalwarts used the New York City Customs House and other positions to extort money and exert power. Garfield took Conkling head on, and prevented the Senator from putting a crony in the position; in protest, Conkling resigned his office. On July 2, 1881, Garfield was shot twice by assassin Charles Guiteau. It is a strange twist of fate that among the people accompanying Garfield that day was Robert Lincoln, Abraham Lincolns only surviving son. Garfield died on September 19, 1881; many believe that his doctors and their poor medical care contributed to Garfields death.
