THE STORY: 1964

Lyndon B. Johnson was the President of the United States.
There was no Vice President of the United States.

Martin Luther King Jr. won the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize.

At the rip old age of 5, 1964 held my first real childhood memories. My uncle enlisted in the US Air Force that year and had to report to Andrews Air Force Base. We took a road trip to bring him there and on the way stopped to spend a few days at the New York World’s Fair. Most prominent in my mind were the Disney “It’s a Small World” and “Hall of Presidents” exhibits along with the GE technology through the years exhibit.

The nation was still reeling from the assassination of President Kennedy in November of 1963. The North Vietnamese torpedoed a US Destroyer in the Gulf of Tonkin which pushed the United States officially into the Vietnam War. China detonated its first atomic bomb. Nikita Khrushchev was deposed as the premier of the USSR. Alexei Kosygin succeeded him as premier and Leonid Brezhnev became the first secretary of the Communist Party. Closer to home, the Warren Report concluded the Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in the assignation of JFK and Jack Ruby was convicted for the murder of Lee Harvey Oswald.

In the everyday life of Americans, the nation cheered for team USA in the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan and the Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. In Terry McDermott (speed skating) won the only gold metal for the United States in Innsbruck. The USA redeemed itself by winning 36 gold metals in Tokyo. Don Schollander (swimming) became the first person to win 4 gold medals in one Games. Al Oerter won his third consecutive gold medal for the discus and Bob Hayes ran a 10 second 100 yd to win gold. Payton Place premiered on ABC and the Beatles were guest s on the Ed Sullivan Show. The world lost Peter Lorre (actor), General Douglas MacArthur (US ARMY), Rachel Carson (author), Ian Fleming (author), Gracie Allen (actor), Harpo Marx (actor) and Cole Porter (musician).

The St. Louis Cardinals won the World Series defeating the New York Yankees, 4 games to 3.
The Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup defeating the Detroit Red Wings, 4 games to 3.
The Boston Celtics beat the San Francisco Warriors 4 games to 1 for the NBA Championship.
The Super Bowl had not been established yet.
The UCLA defeated Duke to win the NCAA Basketball Championship.
