Owner Comments:

Nice original matte proof from the original year of striking. This proof is after the offending V.D.B. was removed. Why the hew and cry as initials had been on coins going back to Gobrecht. The initials on previous coins were somewhat more tastefully hidden in the devices, often it was a single letter initial and periods were not used. It seems to me that the V.D.B. in the clear reverse field was too close to a signature (vis-a-vis C GOBRECHT F)for the people of the time.
