The year is 1976 and it was an exciting time in our country when we celebrated 200 years as an independent nation. Marking the occasion of our independence, the quarter, half-dollar, and dollar coins all had patriotic commemorative designs. The reverse design of this MS-66, 1976-D Bicentennial Quarter consists of a victory torch encircled by 13 stars and a colonial drummer. Lacking modern methods of communication during the Revolutionary War, drummers were important members of their regiment. The primary function of the colonial drummer was to relay orders from battlefield commanders to soldiers on the front line using their drums. Other duties included sounding taps, reveille, muster, marching cadence, the call to arms, and signaling changes in strategy. Colonial drummers in Revolutionary War times tended to be boys twelve to sixteen years of age. Armed with nothing more than a drum and drumsticks, these brave young men were sometimes the first to fall in battle. The victory torch on the reverse of the bicentennial quarter is symbolic of the colonies’ hard fought victory to secure freedom and liberty for themselves and future generations of Americans. The thirteen stars that encircle the torch represent the thirteen colonies, sharing equally in the light of victory.
