2009 marked the start of a new series of Sacagawea dollars which many now call Native American dollars. Instead of the Bald Eagle reverse, the reverse changes each year with a new theme. Also, some of the coin’s wording is moved to the edge.
Thirteen stars, the year and mintmark, and the words E PLURIBUS UNUM are inscribed into the edge.

The obverse still features Sacagawea and her son. The theme of the reverse is Native American Agriculture and depicts a woman using the “three sisters planting method” where corn, beans, and squash are planted together in one mound. The corn provides support for the beans, beans provide nitrogen to the soil, and the squash provides a heavy ground cover which discourages weeds. This ancient planting method is known to provide much greater productivity. (I’m going to have to try this!)
