To commenmorate the 500th Anniversary of Christopher Columbus discovered America, the US Mint issued a set of coins for this occasion. The half dollar version was minted picturing Columbus Landed in the New World on the observe. The reverse showns the three ships, Santa María, Pinta and Santa Clara.
