Owner Comments:
The 1854-O is the most common of the set in AU and above due to the larger number of AU coins that survived a high minting of 153,000 (Second only to the 1843-O small date, which Breen suggests had a mintage of 288,000). However, it is not as common as the 1843-O small date overall, or even solely in mint state - where there are an estimated 15 to 20 known (versus the 1843-O SD where there are 35 to 45 known).
The census shows PCGS 5/5 NGC 7/2 in June of 2008, with the NGC MS62 having grown by one in 2008.
The present piece, and NGC MS62, is noted for its luster and originality (of course!). It has an intense yellow gold color. It is interesting to note the that logo for the "5" changed since the 1852. It looks very much like the 5 on the double eagle where the upper portion is smaller with a more pronounced vertical bar slight.
