In 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in negotiating peace in the Russo-Japanese War. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake (estimated magnitude 7.8) on the San Andreas Fault destroys much of San Francisco, California, killing at least 3000, with 225,000-300,000 left homeless, $350 million in damages. United States Congress passes the Meat Inspection Act and Pure Food and Drug Act. Overseas, the world's first submarine, the Unterseeboot 1, enters the German navy.
