Tokelau is an island nation in the south Pacific Ocean and it is a territory of New Zealand. Tokelau was originally settled by Polynesian people who immigrated from nearby islands.

The obverse of the coin has a picture of a snake. In the Chinese zodiac 2013 is the Year of the Snake. The reverse of the coin has a picture of the Queen of England. This is because Tokelau is a Territory of New Zealand.
