A lustrous and appealing example of a popular low-mintage date, struck on the West Coast while the Civil War raged "back East." Pale golden highlights are forming on both sides of this sharp specimen - the only lightness of design detail is from honest wear, not strike. Of the 20,000 examples of the date struck, probably just a couple dozen (at most) specimens survive today that can rival or surpass the present coin. This issue was a workhorse in commerce at a time when collecting coins was in its formative years in America, and interest in branch mint pieces was virtually nonexistent.
