Owner Comments:
Gold Liberty coins were first minted in 1838. The quarter eagle, half eagle, and eagle all used a design similar to the Coronet cent, while the double eagle used a slightly modified design. These gold coins were minted until 1907/1908. The eagle has two (or three) varieties. Some (i.e. PCGS) count the first year of the eagle which used a modified design that had a lock of hair covering Liberty's ear as a different type. It is quite rare, Type 2 has no motto without the lock of hair; Type 3 uses the motto "In God We Trust". Only the Type 3 was used in the 20th century.
This high-grade example exemplifies the beauty of the type.
