Owner Comments:
Production of gold from the California gold fields peaked in 1853. As a result, the mint's production of gold quarter eagles also peaked at an all time high of over 1.4 million coins. That number was never reached again in the remaining years of quarter eagle production. NGC and PCGS combined have graded about 2,800 different coins making this date extremely common. A number of years ago a large hoard of $2.50 gold pieces came to the market. No inventory of the dates in this hoard was ever published, but one source stated over 500 uncirculated 1853 dated coins was part of this hoard. Many of the coins were gems making this early date extremely affordable.
