Circulation Strike Mintage 1,676,000
With the relatively low mintage, it took some time cherrypicking to find this coin with above-average strike, including an example in the rare case with the majority of feathers on the Eagle's left leg on the reverse.
Mint luster is present and richer in this example in comparison to the other MS-62 examples I examined which had a somewhat duller luster, numerous contact marks and hairlines in key/focal areas.
Overall, eye appeal was attractive.
On the obverse, Liberty's head and left hand had about 80% of design details. No distracting marks, contact marks or hairlines were seen.
On the reverse, about 50% of the Eagle's left leg feathers were present. Notable were scuff marks on the neck feathers and some of the breast feathers.
Quite honestly, I was surprised that this coin was only graded an MS-62 based on the ANA grading standards that I became familiar with. The eye appeal, lack of hairlines or contact marks, and better-than-average mint luster in my mind qualified it for a higher grade, but I'll leave the grading for the experts. I am just very pleased with my find in this 1937-D.
