Circulation strike mintage 508,000 ( the scarcest number of the three 1916 mints)

Mint state examples of 1916-S were prohibitively expensive due to the scarcity of the issue. This coin is obviously in very circulated condition with design details being well worn on both the obverse and reverse due, in part, to the worn condition of the protective rims (almost to the coin's surface). The key areas of interest (highest aspects of the design) including Liberty's head and left hand/wreath on the obverse are visible in outline form but lack central detail. The same is true for the Eagle's breast and legs on the reverse.

In mint state examples I examined, this year/mintmark's flat rims imparted very good detail to the design elements yet, even in mint state, the details are not as "crisp" as 1916 Philadelphia minted coins.
