The "Louisiana Purchase" is commemorated with an image of a Brown pelican (the state bird), a trumpet with musical notes, and an outline of the territory of Louisiana (as purchased from France in 1803). John Mercanti was the designer for the coin's reverse.

Louisiana was admitted in 1812 as the 18th U.S. state. There was a mintage of 892,229 proof coins.
