Owner Comments:

The 1986 dollar commemorates the Statue of Liberty. There were 723,635 coins produced by the Philadelphia Mint and 6,414,638 proof coins minted by the San Francisco Mint (the highest mintage figure in the Modern Commemorative era). This John Mercanti designed coin features the Statue of Liberty and the main building of Ellis Island on the obverse, and an image of Lady Liberty holding a lit torch on the reverse, with an inscription from Emma Lazarus's poem (The New Colossus) that reads: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." This was a very popular coin series. Surcharges from the coin's sale were used to fund the statute's restoration project.
