The Japan Mint has struck this legal tender 10,000 yen gold and 1,000 yen silver coins as part of the Great East Japan Earthquake reconstruction project, which has been designated as a national project. These coins are issued as the second series out of four under the Great East Japan Earthquake Reconstruction Project Commemorative Coin Program.

The second series designs feature an origami bird flying over Japan for the silver coin and various streamers and a school for the gold coin. All coins will feature the common design of a lone pine tree that survived the tsunami in Rikuzentakata. This “miracle pine”, which became a symbol of the reconstruction, is surrounded by pigeons.
