With a mintage of only 4,100 pieces, this is a scarce coin that has been very difficult to find. Both the Philadelphia and San Francisco mint quarter eagles have a raised bar on the neck next to the jaw. This bar was caused by foreign matter sticking to the hub when the obverse die was sunk from it. Only the proofs have no such neck bar.
