This coin was a moon shot for me. It looks better in hand than in photo but I have kept the auction photos for context. I had planned to actively bid that night as it was listed in a Heritage premium night auction. I had a pre-auction bid of $8500 as a placeholder, then got distracted, and left and went to bed. When I woke up I had won the coin... WHAT? No other SLQ that night sold under the $10,000 mark and most >$20,000. I think that I benefitted from coins such as 19-D and 26-D in FH grading 64 to 65 and a 27_s in 66 that took the spotlight off this coin.
This was the only AU in the group. What a surprise.
The 18/7-S is a coin that is almost unknown in full head (FH); it is unknown in my price range in FH. Cline stated that less than 10 exist in FH which is consistent with population reports, given re-submission numbers.
Though not a top-pop this coin will always hold a place in my heart as an early Christmas present.
