In 1889, the Philadelphia, New Orleans, Carson City, and San Francisco Mints were producing Morgan dollars, with subsidiary silver coins largely ignored. At the four mints, nearly 35 million silver dollars were coined, and more than 33 million of those were struck in Philadelphia and New Orleans. With 21,726,000 struck, the 1889 Philadelphia Mint dollar had the highest annual production of any issue in the entire series from 1878 to 1921. Only the 1922 and 1923 Peace dollars had higher mintages

Despite the immense mintage, this issue becomes very rare above the MS66 leve
