Lyman Allen #11.09 (KM #170) - Mintage: 949,000
This coin is very difficult to obtain in uncirculated grades and I am grateful to one of my fellow Philippine Collectors Forum members for selling it to me.
Varieties
------------------------------------------------
11.09 - Normal Date and Normal Mint Mark centered between rim and "dot."
11.09 - Normal Date with High Mint Mark. The mint mark should be centered between the rim and the large "dot" just above it. On these coins, the "S" mint mark was placed so far from the rim that the upper loop of the "S" essentially merges into the dot. In many cases, the lower loop of the "S" mint mark is also filled due to a broken die. (This Coin.)
11.09a - RPM S/S The first mint mark punch was placed very high just as in the previous description, but as second "S" was struck over it in the normal position. The original strike is generally very bold and dramatic.
This Coin
------------------------------------------------
This particular 11.09 is the high mintmark variety and it also shows two other common characteristics of this variety. The lower loop of the "S" mint mark is filled in due to a die break. and a substantial die crack can be seen emanating from the eagles right wing and extending all of the way through the denticles to the rim.
