Early Releases.
The Great Smoky National Park, along the border between Tennessee and North Carolina. It was first established as a national site in 1926. It is world famous for its diverse plant and animal life, in fact it is a part of an International Biosphere Reserve. Then there is the beauty of its mountains themselves. The name "Smoky" comes from the natural fog caused by the vegetation that often hangs over the range. There were once many small Appalachian communities scattered throughout the region. The park is full of remnants of southern Appalachian mountain culture. Interestingly, it is America's most-visited national park - - I would have expected Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, or Yosemite to hold that title.
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park quarter is the first of 2014 and the 21st overall in the program. The reverse design depicts a historic log cabin found within Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is set in beautiful hardwood forest with a hawk circling above. Inscriptions are GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS, TENNESSEE, 2014 and E PLURIBUS UNUM.
