I consider it an honor to be part of the NGC Registry and for my set to have been chosen to receive this award. My goal is to assemble a collection of So-Called Dollars and related medals that consists of attractive, quality examples no matter their grade. Many of the medals in my set are finest known or top pop examples, with the majority of the remaining medals that make up the set being within a point or two of top pop status. Thematic & Topical Coins coinsandmedals Social elitism: As told by the history of English copper 1694-1807 With this set, I hope to highlight the social circumstances that further propagated that numerous issues surrounding the production of regal copper, bronze, and tin coinage in England from the reign of William and Mary to that of George III. Furthermore, in using the coins in my modest but expanding collection, I hope to provide some basic knowledge regarding the numerous patterns, proofs, and business strikes of regal English copper. It is my sincere hope that giving the historical context in the introduction, paired with examples from my collection, may entice others to explore this vibrant area of history. I am too sensible to think this meager set will have a profound enough impact to make any significant contributions to the hobby. Still, if I can intrigue even one collector, I would consider the time and effort invested in this collection to be a striking success!

This set won the NGC Registry "Most Creative Custom Set" award in 2019. This was a complete surprise and it means a great deal to me that others have found some enjoyment from my collection.

Notes from the judges:

The goal of this collector is to portray a historical pattern of discrimination against the poor and working classes through neglecting their need for small change coins. Despite plenty of evidence that low value copper pieces were needed, Britain’s Royal Mint seldom attended to this need before the 19th Century. This tale is told through a selection of about two dozen coins spanning 1694-1807. Each entry provides excellent photos and highly detailed commentary about its numismatic aspects and the owner’s experiences with that coin. 		8/20/2019

World Coins Cozdred United Kingdom Gold Sovereigns -- Date Set Complete set 1817 to date. Total of 175 dates as of 2023. Have 111 = 63%.

I started collecting gold sovereigns in Jan 2022, so the set is just getting started. A few of the rarer years will not be obtainable on my limited budget, but I hope to acquire as many as possible.

In every case, my main objective is to obtain coins with great "eye appeal". Not looking for the highest grade, but rather the nicest looking example that I can find for each year. Since most MS60 to MS62 coins are heavily "bag-marked", I will generally seek out nicer looking AU coins for my collection.

A separate sub-goal is to collect all of the 1979 to 2022 coins in Proof condition. Since only a few thousand were struck each year, that is going to take a while! So this is a long-term project.

Thematic & Topical Coins coinsandmedals What comes next? You've been freed. Do you know how hard it is to lead? Although my ambition is to build a complete collection of the Soho Mint pieces, this would be an unrealistic goal. Instead, my goal is to accumulate a representative sample of Soho pieces that depict the height of artistic and scientific ingenuity of the era. In completing this goal, I hope to bring knowledge to those interested by providing detailed pictures and accurate descriptions. A great deal of numismatic history remains to be explored by those unfamiliar, and what better way to learn than by looking at a selection of handpicked specimens?

As of May of 2024, I have over two hundred pieces to add to this set. They will be slowly added as time permits once they have been graded.

This set won the NGC Registry "Most Informative Custom Set" award in 2020. I am deeply humbled by NGC’s generosity, and this award, paired with the kind words from the NGC judges, means a great deal to me.

Notes from the judges:

As the owner of this set explains, its title is taken from a line in the musical Hamilton that is uttered by Britain’s King George III to the newly independent America. In fact, the introductory text to this set makes for such fascinating reading that it’s easy to forget about the coins. These comprise a broad assortment of the copper pieces struck for George III at Matthew Boulton’s Soho Mint from 1788 to 1813. Each piece is nicely illustrated and accompanied by very detailed text about its technical details, as well as its historical context. This is a truly superb presentation.

Token & Medals coinsandmedals The medals of Soho near Birmingham This set is a tribute to my friend, Bill McKivor, who recently passed away. Although we only knew each other for a relatively short time, Bill quickly became one of my favorite people. He is the sole reason I ended up collecting the medals of the Soho Mint, and as such, it seems fitting that his memory lives on in my collection. Bill had an eye for exceptional quality, and although he handled most of the Boulton Family collection, the medals held a special place in his heart. I, too, have developed a keen fondness for the Soho medals, and so far, I have been successful in locating many examples paired with silver-lined brass shells. Several of them once resided in either the Boulton family or the James Watt Jr. collections. This set aims to build a top-notch collection of Soho medals, emphasizing the ones Bill held in such high regard. The pieces that comprise this collection have been carefully selected. When appropriate, I have included the relevant provenance for each piece and the historical significance of the event or person depicted on the medal.

As of April of 2024, I have over three dozen additional medals to add to this set. Some are already graded, but the bulk of them are raw. Once I have more time and funds these pieces will be graded and slowly added to the set as I take the time to enjoy their relative history.

Thematic & Topical Coins brg5658 Horses My goal is to create a collection of coins, medals, tokens, and other numismatic items which feature prominent images of the horse. Items included vary greatly in the use of the horse image. While this is not an exhaustive collection of such items, it is a wide-ranging set of coins paying tribute to one of the worlds most graceful and beautiful creatures. I also have a large collection of raw horse related numismatic items (around 100 pieces not replicated here).

Most pieces feature the horse in one of three ways:

  • The horse as a symbol of heraldry, power, or mythology

  • The horse with a mounted (usually famous) rider

  • The horse in its natural surroundings as an animal intertwined with the history of humans

Judge's Comments: Thematic collecting is always popular, and this one makes the most of coins featuring horses. In addition to a great array of coins and tokens from around the world, from ancient times to modern, the individual entries are presented in an extremely attractive and entertaining manner. A template is used that presents the coins in “postcard” form, with an enlarged view of the side bearing the horse imagery. A second postcard includes other non-numismatic images which help to tell its story and place it in context. This is a truly fun set which will appeal even to the non-collector.
 

2015 NGC MOST INFORMATIVE CUSTOM SET
Judge's Comments: This charming collection features depictions of horses on coins, medals and tokens from all periods of history back to ancient times. Having already been awarded “Most Creative Custom Set” in 2011, it presently features over 250 pieces and will continue to grow. Each specimen is described in detail, with most entries providing information about both the numismatic item and its subject matter. This is done in the form of two postcard style views, one for the specimen and another for the subject. The project is ongoing, particularly with respect to the historic views, but it’s already a very broad and educational presentation that transcends numismatics alone.

World Coins deposito 26 Centuries of Gold Primary Objective: Assemble a timeline of gold coins from the start of coinage through the present.
Ideally, this will be without more than 100 years between the examples for each century. The second century BC (100's BC) is a tough century to get gold coins from.

Secondary Objective: Illustrate the longest running issues of coins used in long-distance trade between neighbors, enemies, and strangers. Once coinage was developed, major international trade almost always relied on gold and silver coins. This is why Western Europe was draining out gold and silver to India and East Asia in the long run; a forerunner of today’s major trade deficits between the “West” and modern India and East Asian states.
Examples of “mini series” include the Netherlands gold ducats of 1586 to the present, Venetian ducats from the 1280’s to 1797, Islamic dinars and other gold units from about 700 to the present, Roman gold from about 0 to 1200, etc.

Tertiary Objective: Identifiable shipwreck coins, coins with good pedigree, coins of villains and heroes.

Mint Errors Jaelus Jaelus' Hungarian Mint Errors I am attempting to collect major errors of Hungarian circulating issues as I see attractive and interesting examples come to market. I am particularly interested in mint errors from the Austro-Hungarian compromise period (1868-1918), though they are very difficult to find.

Of particular interest to me in modern errors are the hole error types of the 2 fillér KM-546 (1950-1989) and KM-673 (1990-1992). Currently I have examples of KM-546 with a major offset hole and with double punched holes, however, I am still looking for an example with the hole absent entirely, as well as comparable examples of these error types in the short-lived KM-673.

It is my opinion that he was one of the most interesting personae in German history. As a very intelligent and educated man, he assumed his role as a King with full responsibility and, arguably, great passion. He had a great many passions; he loved change, and imposing it, he loved women, art, science, Greece, architecture etc. – but his dearest passion of all was coins, of course! He adored seeing new coins, especially those displaying his portrait and great achievements as the King. He oversaw the production of many commemorative coins: more than any other Germanic ruler.
