Owner's Description

Purchased from board member, RGT, Randy, on 10-9-97 for $650. Thanks for the great coin and the great photo!

Quote from TomB:

"That's a truly interesting looking 1837, Victor. In my experience, the 1837 is tougher than either the 1838 or 1839 to find with meat and with any level of originality."

*************************
1837 HALF DOLLAR
*************************

Mintage:
Circulation strikes: 3,629,820
Proofs: est. 10

Designer: Christian Gobrecht

Diameter: ±30 millimeters

Metal content:
Silver - 90%
Copper - 10%

Weight: 206.25 grains (13.36 grams)

Edge: Reeded

Mintmark: None (for Philadelphia)

Yeah, Randy really hooked me up on this great type coin. The more I look at it, the more I appreciate it. Do any auction search and most of these types are dipped out, ugly, hairlined and no luster. Not this one. The luster is beeming under the patina. It really has great eye appeal and the luster is incredible. I honestly can't find any rub on the obverse. It shows on the eagle but I wonder if that is cabinet friction. What do you think, Tom? It is at least an AU64 in my opinion.

I saw an NGC AU55 on teletrade a few weeks ago that was conserved and had great luster. It was maybe a $600 coin but it sold for over $1100. Incredible.

So, Randy, thanks for this great coin for my type collection. It fits very nicely with my collection and I know that it would fit well with Tom's, as well. And he is even more finicky than I. :þ This would meet his criteria for originality and eye appeal.

Even though it could not be absolutely proven, I don't think that this coin has ever been dipped. It definitely has never been wiped. This is a coin which grows on ya with each viewing.

Victor
