This coin commemorates the 200th Anniversary of the Congress of the United States. The obverse depicts the Old Capitol Dome atop the Capitol Building that housed the meeting chambers of the House of Representatives and the Senate for two centuries. Today it stands as a tribute to the people and its government. On the reverse is the eagle from the Old Senate Chamber. In the Old Senate Chamber is where the desk of the Vice President of the United States is located. This is crowned as a place of importance by an elaborate crimson canopy, and made of thick mahogany from which a carved gilt eagle and shield stand suspended above the Vice President’s chair. This stands for strength and unity of the young American republic.
