A Primer of Pedigreed Coins From A to Z

Owner:  Coin Trader
Last Modified:  9/6/2016
Set Description
This new set contains pedigreed coins only. Eventually I will add text explaining the pedigrees.

Set Goals
This set will eventually contain at least one pedigreed coin representing each of the 26 letters of the alphabet. Why? Because that's how primers are organized.

View Coin A is for American Numismatic Association United States 10C 1959 ANA CENTENNIAL SAMPLE NGC MS 65 Ex: ANA Centennial

ANA Centennial pedigree noted on slab, graded MS65, no line fatty. This coin was a given to attendees at the 1991 ANA Coin Show in Chicago, Illinois. As a side note, graded sample slabs are scarcer than samples without numeric grades, watch for them. Also to note, the coin inside is actually a 1959-D, not a Philadelphia coin. We only know of one other coin with this submission number (145534) that is ANA Pedigreed, and it follows by one coin in the submission sequence (085).
View Coin B is for Bass United States $2.5 1851 BASS NGC AU 55 Ex: Harry Bass

Nice, lightly circulated pre-civil-war Quarter Eagle from the collection of Harry Bass, the "King of Gold".
View Coin And Benson United States 5C 1944 S PCGS MS 66 Ex: Benson Brilliant, good strike.
View Coin And Binion United States $1 1886 BINION COLLECTION NGC MS 65 Ex: Binion Collection

Pedigreed to the hoard of coins owned by the famous Las Vegas Casino magnate, this coin is one of a small percentage to grade out at Gem. Special green label insert highlights the pedigree.
View Coin C is for Carter United States $2.5 1879 PCGS AU 58 Ex: Amon Carter

This is a beautiful coin with proof like fields that looks MS63 at first glance. Slight cabinet friction limits the grade. We haven't sent this coin to CAC but it certainly would sticker. Amon Carter was a Dallas newspaper magnate whose collection was sold at auction by Stacks in January of 1984. The original auction tag, lot number 565, is included with the coin.
View Coin E is for Eliasberg United States $20 1909/8 PCGS MS 62 Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Sr.

One of those awesome looking large gold coins that looks like a solid MS63. Tthis coin is my only true Eliasberg-pedigreed overdate, since the 1844/81 large cent is actually a die sinker's blunder, and it's CAC approved.
View Coin And Eliasberg, Jr. United States 1C 1909 VDB L.E.ELIASBERG JR. ESTATE NGC MS 65 RD Ex: Louis Eliasberg, Jr.

A red first year Lincoln Cent pedigreed to the son of Louis Eliasberg, Sr.

A beautiful coin that is only missing an S mint mark for perfection. :)
View Coin F is for Fitzgerald DOLLAR 1964 FITZGERALD COLLECTION NGC REPLACEMENT TOKEN These tokens were privately minted for use in 1964 in the Nevada Gaming Casinos. This token is pedigreed to the Lincoln Fitzgerald Collection and is part of the Nevada Club Reno Hoard. I remember fondly playing at the old Nevada Club. The shiney chrome mechanical slot machines, the 50s style diner and even the sound of coins falling into the trays are all on my mind as I type this. This was a time before Tito, the "ticket in ticket out" style of gaming prevalent today. I could sit and play nickels and check out the dates and mintmarks on the reverse, all the while sipping on the free drinks provided generously by the staff. When I got tired of playing, a 99 cent breakfast awaited in the diner, 24 hours a day. Memories. (No photo taken yet, sorry)
View Coin And 'First Strike' United States S$1 2006 EAGLE FIRST STRIKES PCGS MS 69 First Strike Pedigree on label. Flag label. Brilliant.
View Coin G is for General Services Administration United States $1 1883 CC GSA HOARD NGC MS 64 Ex: GSA Hoard

Near gem GSA Morgan Dollar complete with a numbered card from the GSA sale in the 1970s. I have no idea if this card actually goes with this date and mint coin, as I also have an 1883CC GSA that has an un-numbered card. Can anyone enlighten me on which coins have numbered cards and which do not, and which numbers go with which dates?
View Coin H is for Holiday Season 2015 United States S$1 2015 EAGLE PCGS MS 69 Ex: 2015 Holiday Season Pedigree. This coin was received with the membership special package at PCGS, purchased from Amazon.com as part of the $169 annual package special. Silver Label on the newest slab type.
View Coin O is for Omaha Bank Hoard United States 5C 1952 S OMAHA BANK HOARD NGC MS 66 Ex: Omaha Bank Hoard

This is a brilliant, white coin with a strong strike but not quite full steps.

According to Mark Borckardt of Heritage Auction Galleries, his firm purchased the Omaha Bank Hoard in its entirety for a seven-figure total in 2004. The hoard consisted of over 320,000 coins, all in rolls, that were saved between the late 1930s and continuing until the early 1970s. The hoard consisted of cent through half dollar rolls all in mint state condition. It required a moving van to transport everything. The earliest coins in the hoard were original rolls of Buffalo nickels and Walking Liberty halves, with most of the coins being saved in the 1950s and 1960s, and very little saved after 1964.
View Coin P is for Pittman United States 10C 1945 D PITTMAN NGC MS 66 FB Ex: John Jay Pittman

Pleasantly toned CAC approved Winged Liberty Dime pedigreed to former American Numismatic Association President John Jay Pittman. A chemical engineer by trade, Pittman invested a large percentage of his modest annual salary into rare coins. Over the course of a 30-year career, Pittman amassed a collection that would eventually be sold for more than twenty five million dollars.
View Coin R is for Reiver United States 1C 1794 HEAD OF 94 S-44 JULES REIVER COLLECTION NGC FA 2 BN Ex: Jules Reiver Collection. This 18th Century Large Cent has an AG obverse with a full clear date, which is offset by a nearly slick Poor reverse. Nice coin!
View Coin And Richmond United States G$1 1857 RICHMOND COLLECTION NGC AU 53 Ex: Richmond Collection

A very lightly circulated example of this pre-Civil War issue. CAC approved.
View Coin T is for Teich United States 10C 1956 D PCGS MS 65 Ex: Teich Family Collection This coin exhibits lightly mottled toning on the obverse and a crusty reverse patina, and is ihoused in the 2015-PCGS holder. The coin itself has a weak strike and is unremarkable except for the pedigree to the well known New York City coin dealer from the 1940s.
View Coin And Tooth Fairy CANADA - 1968 TO DATE 25C 2011 FROM THE TOOTH FAIRY NGC MS 67 Ex: Tooth Fairy. That's not a misprint. The pedigree is right on the label, "From the Tooth Fairy". Brilliant. So is the coin!
