Set Description
If you wanted to put together a collection of Type 1 Double Eagles that were all the finest known, then you could not ignore the coins recovered from the shipwrecks. Some of the finest examples of Type 1 Double Eagles known were recovered from one of these three shipwrecks.
A MS65 Gem from each ShipwreckThis collection has three gem double eagles, each graded MS65, and each from a different shipwreck (see 1857-S SS Central America, 1865 SS Republic, and 1865-S SS Brother Jonathan).
Finest Known! There is also an example of a SS Republic coin that is the only example graded mint state by either NGC or PCGS (see 1860-O).
Finest Recovered from the SS RepublicThis collection also consists of 17 coins that are the finest recovered for their date, mintmark, and occasionally variety, that were recovered from the SS Republic shipwreck (see 1850, 1850-O Doubled O, 1851-O, 1852, 1852-O, 1853, 1854-S, 1855, 1855-O, 1855-S, 1856, 1857, 1858, 1860-O, 1860-S, 1861 Finest PL of any date, and 1861-O).
Unique Examples from SS RepublicThere were three dates of New Orleans minted double eagles where only one example was found for each date. This collection has two of the three (see 1860-O and 1861-O).
DMPL from the SS Central AmericaOf the thousands of coins recovered from the SS Central America, only seven were graded with a DMPL (Deep Mirror Proof-Like) designation by PCGS. This collection has one of those seven (see 1857-S graded MS63DMPL).
Proof-LikeThere are four coins in the collection that have been designated Proof-Like (PL) by either NGC or PCGS (see 1857-S MS63DMPL and MS65PL, 1860-O MS60PL, and 1861 MS63PL).
