Azores, Countermarked 1200 Reis ND (1887) on 1807 TH Mexican 8 Reales
KM-unlisted; Gomes-L1-21.09 (ex. L-1-31.09)
The decree called for all foreign silver and copper coinage then circulating to be countermarked with crowned G.P. (Governo Portuguese). Countermark well struck with excellent definition of the details and lustrous. Overall light attractive grey tone which deepens in the peripheries. Both countermark and host coin.
Rare: NGC has only graded four pieces: 1/45, 1/50, 2/55
PCGS has only graded two in total as 8 Reales, but does not indicate which country's 8 Reales they are countermarked on.
Ex Trastamara
It seems that all of these (1887) countermarked coins are scare to extremely rare.
Decree of March 31, 1887
The second decree ordained that all foreign silver and copper coinage circulating in the Azores was to be countermarked with a crowned G.P. (Govern now Portuguese) within a circle. These were eventually to be replaced or exchanged by the current Portuguese coinage upon their entry into the public treasury. This countermark for general use is found on a variety of Portuguese, Brazilian, and foreign issues.
This countermark has been heavily counterfeited and should be approached with caution.
