View Coin 1853 Federal Gold Dollar UNITED STATES G$1 1853 NGC AU 58 1853 Type 1 U.S. Gold Dollar ...First minted in 1849 as a direct result of the California Gold Rush. It was this coin which prompted the United States Secret Service to slow and then halt the minting of California Gold denominated pieces and even California Gold tokens, as it was felt that these California gold pieces too closely resembled this Federal Gold Dollar and were thus in violation of the law (Private Coinages Act of 1864). Even Miner Tokens, it was felt, bore too close a resembelence to the Gold Dollar to be considered legal by the Secret Service!! All such pieces were suppressed until in 1884 when the Secret Service allowed the manufacture of "bangles" such as the Arms of California token series.

After visits from the U.S. Secret Service concerning his coining activities, Brand changed the obverse of his coins to a miner with a pick. This design was still rejected by the Secret Service, so Brand added a new reverse which was a large "Q" or "H" and Cal Gold Charm. This design was submitted to the Secret Service for their review and, again, it was rejected. Finally, in 1884 the Secret Service allowed the manufacture of California Gold "Bangles".)
