In 1816 a squadron under Admiral Sir Edward Pellew was sent to Algiers where they arrived on 27 August, in company with a small Dutch squadron. They sought the release of the British Consul, who had been detained, and over 1000 Christian slaves, many being seamen taken by the Algerines. When they received no reply the fleet bombarded Algiers. Pellew was subsequently created Viscount Exmouth.

I don't purchase many medals. It's not that I don't like them, I just prefer coins that were used in commerce. When I saw this historic medal I just couldn't say no. It was made for the ANS to coincide with the 1909 Hudson Fulton Celebration. These were made in multiple sizes. In addition to silver they were also made out of brass, aluminum and white metal. This particular piece is 102mm in diameter and is 11.7 ounces of Sterling Silver. This is the largest size made and is pretty scarce.
The medals I have seen all have the same design regardless of size. They also made a number of different size pin backs. In addition there was numerous advertising pieces made including the pictured post card.

The Hudson-Fulton Celebration from September 25 to October 9, 1909 in New York and New Jersey was an elaborate commemoration of the 300th anniversary of Henry Hudson's discovery of the Hudson River and the 100th anniversary of Robert Fulton's first successful commercial application of the paddle steamer. The maritime achievements of Hudson and Fulton foreshadowed the importance of the river to New York's progress and identity. Organizers used the event not only to display the success of the two men, but also the status of New York City as a world city and the achievements of its citizens.

Struck to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, this 2015 Pistrucci Waterloo Silver Medal is struck by Britain's Royal Mint in Eight Ounces of 99.9% Silver. Each medal has been approved by The Royal Mint and certified by NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation) to be One of First 500 Struck and comes in a wooden presentation case, with a Royal Mint numbered certificate of authenticity and a Waterloo Medal storybook.
Sir William Wellesley Pole, the first Duke of Wellington's brother, commissioned Pistrucci to create the medal 10 days after the Allied victory. It took Pistrucci over 30 years to complete the molds because of the medals mammoth dimensions and the complexity of the design. The mold was a massive 134mm (5.28 inches) in diameter. By the time the molds were completed, the four Allied sovereigns who were to receive the medal had died, and it was never made.
The Battle of Waterloo brought more than two decades of Napoleonic Wars to an end. This brought a welcome peace over Europe. As a fitting tribute, the Waterloo Campaign Medal was struck for all who fought in the battle. But, it wasn't Pistrucci's medal. A second medal, Pistrucci's medal, was to be designed and presented to the heads of the allied countries and the commanders involved in the battle. Though the original was designed, it went unstruck in Pistrucci's lifetime and for many years beyond...Until now.
For the 200th anniversary of the epic battle, Royal Mint struck Pistrucci's design a reality with the release of this 8oz silver Battle of Waterloo Medal. The reverse represents the mythical 'Battle of the Giants', where the giants are said to have unsuccessfully challenged the Olympian Gods. In this composition, Pistrucci depicted 19 figures struck down by the thunderbolts of Jupiter – 19 for each year of the Napoleonic Wars. At the center of the reverse is a pair of powerful steeds, ridden by characters bearing the features of Wellington and Blücher, both guided by the winged figure of Victory, who was also depicted upon Wyon's Campaign Medal that was awarded to those involved in the Battle of Waterloo.
Inspired by Greek mythology, the obverse shows the heads of the four allied nations feature at the center of the obverse: Prince Regent George IV, Francis II of Austria, Alexander I of Russia and Frederick William II of Prussia. Anne (1665-1727) Queen of Great Britain and Ireland (1702-1714), was the second daughter of James, Duke of York (King James II, 1685-1688), and Anne Hyde. Although her father was a Roman Catholic, she was reared a Protestant at the insistence of her uncle, King Charles II. In 1683 Anne was married to Prince George of Denmark. Succeeding William III, Anne was the last Stuart sovereign and, after the Act of Union (1707), the first monarch of the United Kingdom of England and Scotland. As the last Stuart monarch, she wished to rule independently, but her intellectual limitations and chronic ill health caused her to rely heavily on her ministers, who directed England’s efforts against France and Spain in the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714). This war dominated her reign and is often called Queen Anne’s War. Anne was the last English monarch to exercise the royal veto over legislation, but the rise of parliamentary government was inexorable. The Jacobite cause was crushed when Anne was succeeded by George I. About Henry Clay:
Leader of the Whig party and five times an unsuccessful presidential candidate, Henry Clay (1777-1852) played a central role on the stage of national politics for over forty years. He was secretary of state under John Quincy Adams, Speaker of the House of Representatives longer than anyone else in the nineteenth century, and the most influential member of the Senate during its golden age. In a parliamentary system, he would have undoubtedly become prime minister.
Clay’s personal magnetism made him one of America’s best-loved politicians; his elaborate scheming made him one of the most cordially hated. Through it all he displayed remarkable consistency of purpose: he was a nationalist, devoted to the economic development and political integration of the United States

Pedley-Ryan & Co., Denver investment house, in order to provide a convenient medium for speculation in silver and to increase the use and popularity of silver as a medium of exchange, started a "Buy-an-Ounce-of-Silver" campaign Jan. 5, 1933. Silver at that time was in very limited demand, bar silver being quoted at 27 cents an ounce. Up to that time, the minimum amount of silver traded in on the big markets for actual delivery was 25,000 ounces, and this amount had been sold only since summer 1932.
On Jan. 5, Pedley-Ryan began its sale of round, rimless, plain-edge discs. Size of a standard U.S. dollar, they contained one ounce of silver, 430 grains 99% fine. The slugs were sold three for a dollar and Pedley-Ryan was to redeem them at prevailing market prices of silver. It was believed that thousands of investors throughout the country would purchase the "dollars" and would realize large profits when silver reached the 16 to 1 ratio hoped for by the silver bloc. Silver mining interests in Colorado and elsewhere would, in the meantime, benefit from an increased market for silver.
The campaign, which enabled even the smallest investor to speculate, ended in late summer. Sales had not reached anticipated goals. After that, Pedley-Ryan (later known as the Cow Gulch Oil Co.) sold bars of 1,000 ounces only.
Planchets for the pieces were made for Pedley-Ryan by the Sachs-Lawlor Co., Denver, the silver being obtained from the Denver Mint in 100-plus ounce bars. The discs were stamped by a girl in the Pedley-Ryan office. All have plain edge. First five types sold by Pedley-Ryan were stamped or punched (incuse) while Type VII was embossed.
Not more than 500 issued, beginning Jan. 7, 1933. Pedley-Ryan expressed hope this would be "the last and final variety." Complaints developed, however, that some motorists were using the slugs in lieu of silver dollars at automatic filling stations. A further change then was made, both as to size and type (Type VII). It was reported previously that only "50 made" of this Type IV; obviously an error.

depicts "The Bismarck Mausoleum (Bismarck Grabhaus)", Cast Bronze Medal, 356.00g., 105mm, by Karl Goetz, 1919. As you can see it is a big medal measuring over 4" in diameter.
Obverse: Bismarck in the heavens, defiantly clenching his fists with clouds swirling around him.
Legend: Was ich mit Hulfe des deutschen Volkes schuf in grosser Zeit - das hat der Wahn eines einzelnen zerstort • Das deutsche Volk hat sich durtch Unterzeichnung des Friedens von Versailles selbst aus der Reihe der Grossmächte gestrichen • War es fruher gehasst.so wird es jetzt mit Recht verachtet • Es muss sich sogarselbst verachten bis diese Schmach mit dem Blute unserer Feinde abgewaschen wird?" (What I created with the help of the German people over a long period of time - which has been destroyed by the delusion of a single individual. The German people have struck themselves from the list of great powers by subscribing to the Peace of Versailles. It (Germany) was formerly hated, it is now justifiably despised. Bismarck died in 1898 when the German empire he was instrumental in founding was still an ascendant power. This medal struck in the climate of despair and national shame following Germany's defeat in the Great War depicts a Bismarck angered by the failure of the German people, scolding them from the grave.

Calling World War I "the suicide of civilized Europe,' Pope Benedict XV came to the papacy a little over a month after the outbreak of hostilities. Though he had been created a cardinal only earlier in the year, his experience in diplomacy was a key aspect in garnering him the support and votes needed to be elected to lead the Holy See. He embarked upon a great balancing act, attempting to obtain peace in Europe while also attempting not to alienate any countries, especially those that had already moved further away from Catholicism and Rome. Here, Goetz alludes to the bribing of the Pope by the Entente, but this remains a fanciful creation by the author.
