Category:  Token & Medals
Owner:  THN
Last Modified:  11/29/2014
Set Description

This set provides examples of the Hawaii Undated So Called Dollars. As a type set, there are three types of Hawaii Undated So Called Dollars:

  • Type 1 is the Honolulu Aloha Carnival Dollar. It is believed this dollar was minted in 1914 and the surf rider is US Olympic gold medalist swimmer Duke Kahanamoku.
    • HK-721 (brass, R-6, 21-75 known)
  • Type 2 is the King Kamehameha and Iolani Palace Dollar. Each of these three varieties exhibit the incorrect statement "The 49th State" (Hawaii is the 50th State). Holed specimens are common and was used to remove the “49” error. There are three varieties:
    • HK-722 (nickel-silver, R-6, 21-75 known)
    • HK-722a (bright bronze, R-6, 21-75 known)
    • HK-722b (antiqued bronze, R-6, 21-75 known)
  • Type 3 is also the King Kamehameha and Iolani Palace Dollar. Two obverse varieties exist. "Star with rays" is documented in the book So-Called Dollars by Hibler & Kappen. “Star without rays” is not documented in the book So-Called Dollars by Hibler & Kappen, but is documented in the book Hawaiian Money Standard Catalog 2nd Edition by Medcalf & Russell.
    • HK-723 (gilt, R-5, 76-200 known)
