Owner's Description

1863 is the first year of issue. Generally available in circulated grades, it may take some looking to find a nice uncirculated example. Although most first year of type coins are saved in quantity, and this is certainly true of the 1863 1/2 Dinero, no large quantity of nice 1863 1/5 Sols were put away. The ferns on the reverse for the early dated 1/5 Sols (especially 1863) point to different letters and have different shapes depending on the coin. I may try to quantify this in the future. Minor varieties: 1. REPUB: Small superscript o 2. REPUB: Large superscript o (FC - Personal collection XF Cleaned) 3. REPUB: Large superscript o, High 3 in date (FC - Personal collection F) 3. REPUB: Large superscript o 3/? (FC - saw on ebay) 4. REPUB. Large superscript o 5. REPUB. Large/Small superscript o 6. REPUB. Small superscript o 7. REPUB. Large superscript o, Recut 6 (The PCGS MS 62 Heritage coin) It's difficult to say if the REPUB: or REPUB. is overall more scarce. #'s 5 and 6 reported by Flatt have not been seen by me but likely exist. Availability: G-VF: Usually available XF-AU: Scarce 60-62: Very Scarce 63-66: Very scarce Population Report (Jan 2015): NGC: One in 62; One in 66 PCGS: One in 62 Total at both services: 3; 3 in Uncirculated Value Guide: 1972 Almanzar/Seppa: F: 1.40 VF: 2 XF: 5 Current KM: VF: 7 XF: 11 UNC: 57 From the available auction data, this date sometimes does better in Uncirculated than KM reports, possibly due in part to it's first year of issue status as a type coin and it's scarcity in Uncirculated. Auction Results: Sedwick 10/23/2010 NGC MS 62 $46 ("Deeply rainbow-toned, with original luster" - Large superscript 0, high 3 - Cheap!) Heritage 1/17/2013 PCGS MS 62 (REPUB., large superscript o) $170.38 (A healthy sum for a lower-end UNC, though this was obviously undergraded, possibly as good as Gem) Lissner Sale 8/2014 Chicago NGC MS 66 (REPUB:) $393.25 includes BP - Unfortunately I missed my chance to bid on this coin, it's one of only two early dated coins to grade 66.
