Owner's Description

Mounted backwards in the slab :>( A billion Denier Issued by the Bishops of Maguelonne 1125-1215

I purchased this coin on eBay First NGC identified this as a Roberts 4337 two internet sites call it a Roberts 4336. The following comes from the internet.

This coin was minted under tha authority of the Bishop of Maguelonne (S. France). The obverse shows a cross constructed of a fasces (bundle of rods tied together) crossed by two mitres (ecclesiastical or "Pope Type" hats. The fasces is the symbol of Rome and the mitres symbolize the ecclesiastical authority of the bishop, whose ultimate authority resides in Rome.

The obverse legend reads RAMUNDS after Raymond the first bishop to issue the coin. The reverse legend reads NAIBONA (Narbonne) which is the city in the region of Maguelonne in which the coin was minted.

This coin cost me $77 on eBay
