Owner's Description

Roman Empire Constans 337-350 AD AE Centenionalis Grade: AU; Strike 5/%: Surface 3/5 - Lt. Smoothing Census - NGC does not provide census info on ancient coins :>( Obv.: D N CONSTA-NS P F AVG, Pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust left, globe in right hand Rev.: FEL TEMP REPA-RATIO, Helmeted soldier, spear in left hand, advancing right, head left; with his right hand he leads a small bare-headed figure from a hut beneath a tree. The spear points downwards, between the soldier’s two legs Constans (Flavius Julius Constans Augustus) was Roman Emperor from 337 to 350. He defeated his brother Constantine II in 340, but anger in the army over his personal life and preference for his barbarian bodyguards saw the general Magnentius rebel, resulting in Constans’ assassination in 350. With Constantine’s death in 337, Constans and his two brothers, Constantine II and Constantius II divided the Roman world between themselves, after first disposing of virtually all of the relatives of their father who could possibly have a claim on the throne. The army proclaimed them Augusti on September 9, 337. Almost immediately, Constans was required to deal with a Sarmatian invasion in late 337, over whom he won a resounding victory. It wasn’t long that bickering started between Constans and Constantine II over their territories and who got what. Although territories were exchanged problems still existed and were not resolved until Constantine II was removed from the picture. May Cost $25
