Owner's Description

Roman Republic M. Titini c. BC189 - 179 Post reform As Sear #679 - Cr150/1 Coin grades Ch F - Strike: 4/5 Surface: 3/5 Note NGC's Grade information is wrong with two grades for surface Census - NGC does not provide census info on ancient coins :>( Obv. Shows the laur. hd. Of beared Janus I above. Rev. Shows Prow of Galley r., I before, below M.TITINI, above Roma In ancient Roman religion and mythology, Janus is the god of beginnings and transitions, thence also of gates, doors, doorways, endings and time. Most often he is depicted as having two faces on his head, facing opposite directions: one face looks eastward and the other westward. Symbolically they look simultaneously into the future and the past, back at the last year and forward to the next. To be perfectly honest I would have preferred a coin that graded at least VF, but I find this coin quite pleasing and totally natural in color and I would not trade it for higher end coin that has been obviously cleaned or poorly conserved. My cost $102
