Owner's Description

Byzantine Empire Justinian I; AD 527-565 AE 20 Nummi ; Cyzicus. Yr.25 (AD 551/2), Sear #165 Grade XF* Strike: 5/5 Surface: 4/5 Obv. D. N. IVSTINIANVS PP . AVG. – Helmeted and cuir. Bust facing, holding gl. Cr. And shield; to r. cross Rev. Large K; above, cross; to l., A/N/N/O; to r., numerals representing the regnal year; beneath officina letter. Flavius Anicius Julianus Justinianus was born about 483 at Tauresium (Taor) in Illyricum. . He was the nephew of Justin I (518-27), being the son of Justin's sister Vigilantia and a certain Sabatius. Already during his uncle's reign he became the chief power in the state. Justin was an old man, weak in body and mind; he gradually handed over all power to his nephew. In 521 Justinian was proclaimed consul, then general-in-chief, and in April, 527, Augustus; in August of the same year Justin died, and Justinian was left sole ruler. The thirty-eight years of Justinian's reign are the most brilliant period of the later empire. Full of enthusiasm for the memories of Rome, he set himself, and achieved, the task of reviving their glory. The many-sided activity of this leader may be summed up under the headings: military triumphs, legal work, ecclesiastical polity, and architectural activity. Dominating all is the policy of restoring the empire, great, powerful, and united. Although I have a few high grade silver and billon ancients I am most pleased with several of my ancient bronzes such as this one. My pleasure is a result of the coins grade, its condition and its cost. This coin grades XF* with condition descriptors of Strike: 5/5 Surface: 4/5. I must say that I am pleased to have both this AE 20 Nummi and the previous AE Follis (40 Nummi) in that they make almost a perfectly matched set of these two coins. This was not by intent in that I purchased these two coins at different times on eBay. My cost was $64 (eBay) another steal?
