Owner's Description

The obverse design features: "A Pony Express rider, one of a group of 80, the majority wiry teenagers, rides his hardy western mustang at full gallop to right, in the distance, rugged mountains suggest the hazards of snow blocked passes; in the foreground, a bleached skull and tumbleweed suggests the difficulties of desert passage. A parade of telegraph poles advances in the background, a new route of rapid communication which sounded the death knell for the Pony Express after 19 short but dramatic months of operation. Legend above; PONY EXPRESS CENTENNIAL; in exergue, 1860." The reverse: " An authentic replica of the special Pony Express saddle, consisting of a light vaquero frame and seperate "mochila", a leather overskirt with four integral stiff leather "cantinas"-dispatch boxes - for rapid transfer at relay points. Above, a representation the famous "running pony oval" postmark of San Francisco bearing the date Nov. 21, that of the last recorded trip in 1861. Legend surrounding: SACRAMENTO - ST. JOSEPH / 1966 MI. / 10 DAYS."
