Set Description:

The American Gold Eagle is an official gold bullion coin of the United States. Authorized under the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985, it was first released by the United States Mint in 1986. The American Gold Eagle is offered in 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz denominations.

The collection you are viewing consists solely of the 1 ounce proof versions of $50 American Gold Eagle’s from 1986 through present.

These 1 ounce proof coins are produced at the West Point Mint in West Point, New York and carry the mint's mark ("W") beneath the date. These coins are guaranteed by the U.S. government to contain the stated amount of actual gold weight in troy ounces. By law, the gold must come from sources in America, with an additional alloy of silver and copper to produce a more wear-resistant coin of .9167 (22 karat, which had long been the crown gold English standard for gold coins, and before 1834, for American gold coins as well). It is authorized by the United States Congress and is backed by the United States Mint for weight and content.

The obverse design features a rendition of Augustus Saint-Gaudens' full length figure of Lady Liberty with flowing hair, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, with the Capitol building in the left background. The reverse design, by sculptor Miley Busiek, features a male eagle carrying an olive branch flying above a nest containing a female eagle and her hatchlings.

American Gold Eagles minted 1986-1991 are dated with Roman numerals: 1986 MCMLXXXVI, 1987 MCMLXXXVII. 1988 MCMLXXXVIII, 1989 MCMLXXXIX, 1990 MCMXC, and 1991 MCMXCI. In 1992, the U.S. Mint switched to Arabic numbers for dating American Gold Eagles.

The 20th Anniversary $50 Gold American Eagle Set was issued by the US Mint to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the popular gold bullion and collector coin. Each set contained three coins: the 2006-W Proof Gold Eagle, the 2006-W Uncirculated Gold Eagle, and the 2006-W Reverse Proof Gold Eagle.

The collectible proof and uncirculated coins contained in the set were available in other US Mint product offerings, but the 2006-W Reverse Proof Gold Eagle was unique to the set. The raised design elements of the coin are mirrored and the background fields are frosted. This is the reverse of the typical cameo proof finish. It was also the first time that the US Mint had used this type of reverse proof finish!

Of note: The 2006 W Reverse Proof $50 American Gold Eagle PF70 coin is now valued higher than the entire original three coin set! The 20th Anniversary $50 Gold American Eagle Sets went on sale at the United States Mint on August 30, 2006. They were originally priced at $2,610 with an ordering limit of ten sets per household and a maximum production of 10,000.

The United States Mint produces proof versions of $50 American Gold Eagle coin’s for collectors. These American Eagle Proof Coins undergo a specialized minting process, which begins by manually feeding burnished coin blanks into presses fitted with special dies. The coin is struck multiple times so the softly frosted, yet detailed images seem to float above a mirror-like field. After scrutiny by white gloved inspectors, each American Eagle Gold is sealed in a protective plastic capsule and mounted in a handsome satin-lined velvet presentation case with its own official Certificate of Authenticity.

Each $50 American Gold Eagle proof coin has a Diameter: 32.7 millimeters. Fineness: 91.67% gold, 3% silver, 5.33% copper. Weight: 33.931 grams. Net Weight: One ounce fine gold. Edge: Reeded, and are official legal tender.

Please Note: In 2009, the United States Mint did not produce collectible proof American Gold Eagle coins for the first time since the series introduction in 1986. This has led to a continuing outpouring of disappointment from collectors.

The 2009 American Gold Eagle coins were scheduled for release during a time of increased demand for gold bullion coins and limited supply of precious metals blanks for the United States Mint's suppliers. This had implications for the Gold Eagles that the US Mint was able to produce and offer during the year, most notably resulting in the cancellation of the 2009 American Gold Eagle collectible proof versions of the coins.

In October 2009, the US Mint announced the cancellation of the expected collectible proof coin offerings. The Mint cited their legal obligation to produce the bullion versions of the coin in quantities sufficient to meet public demand. There was no such legally mandated requirement for the collectible proof versions of the coins and they were not produced!

The 2010 Proof Gold Eagles went on sale October 7, 2010. After the cancellation of last year’s collector proof offerings for the series, buyers were out in force for the newly released coins.

After only a few days of sales, there were already some sizable dents in the product limits established by the United States Mint, particularly for the individual one ounce proof option, which sold more than half of the maximum product limit by October 10, 2010.

Cumulative sales for the 2010 Proof Gold Eagles across all options totaled more than $47 million. This was the highest debut sales for a US Mint product since the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle.

On April 21, 2011, the U.S. Mint released the Gold American Eagle Proof Sets, in 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz. denominations to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the popular gold bullion and collector coin. The $50 1-ounce AGE 25th Anniversary proof coin is shown in this collection.
