Set Description:

Listed are the Quarter Eagle representatives of the Louisiana Purchase -- a complete set of New Orleans gold coins.

The New Orleans Quarter Eagle Set consists of 13 dates and three varieties: the 1843-O Large Date and Small Date, listed. And the 1839-O narrow fraction and wide fraction and the 1840-O varieties (not listed separately in this census). Please see the set "Jefferson's Change" (get it?) for the second noted example of a date, such as the 1839-O closed date variety, MS62.

Member coins of the Louisiana Purchase Quarter Eagle Set are all graded MS62 or higher, except for the most rare date, the 1845-0, where the set contains two PCGS AU58 coins. With the 1845-O, there are only 3 mint state coins in existance, are none have become available in the last half decade. For most dates, there are less than a dozen mint state examples known, so almost all the coins in this set are condition census, and all have very original surfaces.

Notable coins in this set include the Eliasberg 1846-O (MS63) and the finest known (and rare date) 1856-O, MS62, which has incredible beauty.

Other pieces include the likely finest known 1957-O, MS64. The 1943-O Large Date, MS63 is also very rare, and is probably the second finest known. The 1850-O is the third or fourth finest known, and has untouched, "as made" originality.

While perhaps not quite the strongest date of the Louisiana Purchase (that would probably be the Half Eagles, although the Double Eagles have a couple of spectacular coins), these quarter eagles make a very strong set due to their consistency and originality and the fact that they make a complete set.

In addition, there are some stand-out coins.
