Set Description:

The proof panda series represents an interesting collection of coins that were originally sold for a modest premium over bullion. One of the things makes these coins exciting from a numismatic standpoint is that some of the years had very low mintages (1996's was only 8000)

In the years 1983 through 1987 silver pandas were only struck in proof. There were no MS varieties produced. In 1986 and 1988 there was no regular or proof 1 oz issue silver pandas minted.

From 1989 through 1999 both MS and proof pandas were produced. It was sometimes difficult to tell the proof issues from the regular MS issues so a "P" designation was added to the reverse of the proof coins. Starting in 1993 the reverse designs of the proof coins were entirely different and the "P" designation was eventually dropped in 1995.

During 1997 through 1999 the proofs were issued in a colored design on the obverse. NGC grades these as regular, cameo and ultra cameo strikes however I don't see any difference between them. I think it just depends on the mood of the grader on that day :) One other thing I've noted about the colored proofs is that it's pretty hard to find PF69+ examples of these compared to some of the other proof years. I know a dealer who submitted 40 colored proofs to NGC to only get 6 MS69's back.

1999 was the last year an official proof panda coin was minted but the quality of modern pandas is now so high that most MS issues are prooflike and even nicer than the official early proofs.

Here's an interesting side note about accompanying materials that came with the proof pandas. All the proof pandas had COA's of some sort. Almost all 1987's were issued as a set of both 5 oz and 1 oz coins so the most common COA's for that year are for the set. There are a few COA's for the individual coins floating arount but they are hard to find.

In addition to the COA's many of the proof coins were issued in a wooden box inside an outer cardboard box. From 1989 through 1993, the wooden boxes were hand painted on the top with a design that matched the coin from that year. Most of those boxes are readily available in the market except for the 1992. For whatever reason, that year is very difficult to find. I managed to find one to complete my collection but it wasn't easy. I'm not aware of any special boxes issued from 1994 through 1999 for those silver proof coins.
