Set Description:
NGC uses registry points to rank competitive registry sets. I have no problem with this, in fact I can think of no better way to determine the best set in a grouping of similar sets. However since custom sets are not “competitive sets’ NGC sees no reason to assign registry points. As a result of this thinking NGC assigns no registry points to Custom sets. This approach upsets me. I have three different NGC Custom/Signature set awards and guess what no Registry Points. That does not mean none the coins in these sets have no associated registry points it just means NGC wishes not to recognize this fact.
There is always the following question, you got three awards what’s the big deal with registry points? When it comes to signature sets there is “no big deal” but in the competitive set universe there is also the overall ranking of collections having competitive sets based only on the total registry points in all their registry sets and frankly I would like to know how my custom collection would have stack up against the universe of competitive sets based solely on their combined registry points (this is particularly true of my 2009 award winning set(s)). The major problem is that NGC does not assign registry points to every item they put into one of their holders. No registry points then you cannot have a competitive set. There are some simply great signature set that belong to the competitive side of this discussion. There are two I have looked at several times in the past one involves German thalers and the other Swiss shooting medals and there are a couple of great ancient sets.
So what I am doing here is creating many competitive sets (typically with only one coin per set) for each coin in my signature set that actually has registry points assigned. Apparently I am not the only to do this, there appear to be a few collectors with numerous registry sets that when combined add up to hundreds of thousands to millions of registry points. In my case this approach really does not work in that most of my best coins and all of my medals/tokens have no registry points. I can only hope that someday NGC will assign registry points for every item they certify.
My custom set contains 141 coins of which less than 100 have registry points.
