Set Description:

My collection of certified Iranian 20 Rials, which became the largest denomination issued under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi starting in 1971. Composed of copper-nickel clad, it was also the physically largest circulating coin during that period (Approx. 32 mm in diameter and 9 gm in weight). After the Revolution in 1979, larger denominations were issued.

Coin Series Description: Iran's continuously expanding economy put pressure on the 20 Rials note which did not hold up under rapid circulation during the late 1340's (1960's). To ease this problem, a 20 Rials coin was introduced in late 1350 (1971). Because of it's design, which is the same of as the 10 Rials coin, and the fact that neither coin has the value expressed numerically (initially), the two pieces have been confused by the public. In 1352 (1973), the reverse was adjusted to show the value numerically. The size of the 20 Rials coin, which 31.5 millimeters in diameter, is essentially the same as earlier issued 10 Rials coins and not much larger than current 10 Rials coins. The weight of the 20 Rials coin is 9 grams, composed of copper-nickel, and the edge is milled.

Personal Note and Goals: This coin series are the coins that sparked my interest in numismatics. I was given some of these by father when I was a kid, all of which are still in my collection today, decades later. My goal is to have a high grade, uncirculated set of all issues of this denomination. While this type set has been completed (26 Sept. 2019), there are two pieces which have alluded me in nearly 30 year of collecting:
1) SH1352 - KM# 1180
2) SH1357 - KM# 1181
