Set Description:

My Goal:
To assemble Proof Franklins with clear and deep fields, no toning, solid cameo and outstanding eye-appeal. While proofs are readily available, the pool of available coins is reduced because many coins are unattractive, toned, have hazy fields, hairlines or spots. Further restricting the available coins is that NGC graded cameos make up less than 1% of the total mintages for most years. As a result, finding problem-free high quality cameo proofs with excellent eye appeal is a task that can take a surprising amount of time.

NGC Cameo Availability:
While all pre-1955 years are difficult to find due to the effects of packaging techniques employed by the mint at that time and poor storage over the years, 1950 through 1952 are especially tough years. The middle years get a bit easier since the mint packaging techniques improved substantially. The later dates which benefited from much larger mintages are not necessarily as easy to find as their mintages would indicate. They were plagued by milk spots that appeared years later and their numbers were further reduced by large scale melting of coins during the silver boom around 1980. So, it can sometimes be surprising which years are difficult to locate for your collection.

Collection Status:
As of 12/2018, I have 11 of the 15 coins needed and so far it has taken about 2 years to assemble. So, this endeavor is taking a while but the journey is more important than the destination. In that time I have learned a lot about the Franklin Half Dollar series, numismatics in general and met a number of wonderful people along the way.

Photography:
I have recently begun to add photos. My goal is to try to capture each coin's characteristics as accurately as I can. I do not want editing to depict more nor less coin than I have. To be honest, I am just your average camera user with no high end photography equipment doing the best I can. So, in some cases the photos show haze that is from the photography and not on the coins themselves, mostly on the reverses. It is very difficult to get the lights and camera settings just right to accurately show cameo devices and black fields. I can say with complete certainty that photographing deep mirror proofs is not easy since the fields want to reflect every little background and holder detail that they can while the observer wants them shown as black. Additionally, it is difficult to obtain photos that accurately capture the coin while ignoring the hairlines and imperfections on the holder itself. As my photographic approach and techniques improve, I will post updates. Note: I am finding it interesting that the reverse is tougher to capture accurate cameo effects than the obverse. I am not sure if it is a difference in the relief or that the reverse is busier than the obverse or some other factors.
