Of all the S$20 Commemorative Proof coins issued by the Royal Canadian Mint (and believe me, there are a lot!), this set is by far my favourite. In many ways, these coins have been overlooked by much of the collecting community, despite their immense rarity. The RCM reports that very few of these coins were sold, and there are a number of reasons for this.
Now, I specifically remember this set being released. First and foremost, it was not well-received. I seem to remember a lot of comments on the coin message boards concerning the lack of creativity for the coins, and the repetitious use of the mask on each coin. That was strike one.
Strike two for these coins was the worst financial crisis seen in generations. These coins were released at the height of the crisis. As people lost their homes and livelihoods during the meltdown, the last thing they had on their mind were $80 silver memorabilia items from the RCM. Sales were bleak to put it mildly.
Further to this, the Mint was in the middle of revamping their distribution processes, and therefore did not properly market these coins on their website or through their distribution channels (such as Canada Post). In turn, many of these coins never made it to market ... hence their relative scarcity.

And as if this wasn't enough! A very large factor contributing to the scarcity of these coins was a large purchase made by a third party company who had intended on creating memorabilia items with the Goalie Mask coins and distributing them on the Home Shopping Network. The story is as follows,

"Very few of these Montreal and Toronto coins still exist, as many were destroyed during an attempt to create a memorabilia item for the Home Shopping Network. They attempted to encase the coins in hot plastic as a commemorative showpiece. The hot plastic melted the painted side of the coin, effectively destroying it. It is believed that about 700 coins were destroyed during this process. The other coins were sold directly via the Mint website, as none were distributed to secondary dealers. It is believed that the surviving mintage of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens Goalie Mask coins does not exceed 40 pieces."

The Royal Canadian Mint reports the following as the TOTAL number of pieces sold out of the mintage. Unsold pieces were simply melted down:

Calgary Flames 125
Edmonton Oilers 147
Montreal Canadians 748 (40 surviving mintage?)
Ottawa Senators 95
Toronto Maple Leafs 244 (40 surviving mintage?)
Vancouver Canucks 129

For such a low mintage series, this set has very much been overlooked by investors and collectors alike. The fact that this set has been so thoroughly ignored has ignited a passion in me to complete this set in the highest grade possible.
